Builds green growth and new businesses with clients in materials, energy and cleantech; co-leads global sustainable fuels service line

Tapio is a partner at McKinsey’s Helsinki office and a leader in Sustainability and Global Energy and Materials practices. He works across green materials, energy and cleantech on strategy and business building with clients in the Nordics, Europe and North America. He has significant experience on new green value proposition commercialization, notably on green and circular carbon products such as chemicals, plastics, fuels, textiles, as well as hydrogen, battery materials, waste and selected cleantech applications.

Tapio also co-leads global sustainable fuels service line (advanced biofuels and e-fuels), is part of the McKinsey Platform of Climate Technologies, and speaks often at various industry conferences.

Recent examples of Tapio’s work include the following:

  • Building a new business unit hand-in-hand with a materials sector client from scratch to 40 employees in a year; forming strategy, defining operating model, establishing weekly and monthly working practices, aligning cross business unit interfaces, creating proprietary insights to drive competitive advantage, supporting in core business activity ramp-up across operations and commercial
  • Supporting the strategy journey of an energy sector company, starting from corporate strategy, must-win-battle development, and operating model refresh, followed by various initiatives over years on assets, commercial and new businesses
  • Defining cleantech leaders’ adjacent growth strategy, new venture unit structure and supporting on blueprinting their business case and activities in several areas in circularity
  • Supporting a specialty chemicals corporate venture in their business building with strategy work, pricing, raw material sourcing strategy and capital project value improvement
  • Conducting end-to-end review of post pre-feasibility power-to-x project, suggesting optimizations for the project electricity supply and unit dimensioning, advising on downstream supply chain setup, commercial approach and overall business case risk mitigation
  • Defining cleantech scale-up strategy and execution plan, and supporting towards funding round

Before joining McKinsey, Tapio co-founded a start-up. In his spare time, Tapio enjoys music and good conversations as well as dinners with friends and family.
