Progress in terms of increasing share of renewables (% of renewable energy in energy consumed)

Renewables in the energy mix have been steadily increasing in the past years, reaching the highest point in 2022, with 35 percent—on track to achieving the PNEC’s goal.

Despite only a slight increase in 2022 (0.7 percentage points compared to 2021), renewables penetration is expected to increase significantly in 2023 and 2024, with recent data indicating record-high electricity production from renewable sources. REN reported that between January and August of 2024, 75 percent of electricity was generated by renewables.

Portugal exceeds the EU average by 12 percentage points, sixth highest share of renewables in the energy mix, after Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Denmark, and Estonia (by order of ranking).

Portugal ranks sixth in the European Union for renewable energy, on track to meet its 2030 goal.
Indicator definition
Consumed energy coming from renewable energy sources (RES)—such as solar PV, wind, hydroelectric, biogas, biofuels, bioliquids, and renewable hydrogen—for all sectors of the economy.
Progress assessment
The most recent data point is 35 percent renewables in the energy mix in 2022, based on Eurostat data. To assess progress, a linear curve between 2019 and 2030 is considered, being the arrival reference for the PNEC’s latest target of 51 percent renewables in the energy mix. To that curve, a standard deviation (15 percent) is removed or added to create an on-track range. As the most recent progress is within that range, the status for the indicator is on track.
