Portugal’s manufacturing GVA share has oscillated between 13.2 percent and 14.4 percent in the past decade. Reaching 2014 levels at 13.6 percent, 2023 was among the worst years.
Looking further back, Portugal’s industry has declined substantially, from 18.9 percent in 1996, down to less than 13.0 percent in 2009.
The same trajectory was felt at a European level, though not at such a dramatic pace. The EU average is at 16.4 percent today, almost three percentage points above Portugal.
If we look at the GVA of the broader industry, including mining, energy generation, and water and waste management, the trend has been similar, and the gap versus the European Union is about four percentage points (16.1 percent versus 20.3 percent in 2023, respectively).
