Portugal’s energy dependency fell significantly in 2020, driven by lower energy demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the recovery of the economy, the country managed to sustain the lowest years of energy imports in the past decade (65 percent in 2020 and 67 percent in 2021 and 2023). This is explained by an uptake in renewable energy, as opposed to importing gas.
The 2023 figure is still slightly worse than the European Union’s average of 62 percent (in 2022, even though it was the European Union’s worst year in the past decade), but in line with the PNEC’s goal of 65 percent by 2030.
