Investment in fixed assets

Progress in terms of increasing investment in fixed assets (€ billion)

Investments in fixed assets in the industrial sector have grown steadily since 2013. After slightly falling during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020), investments quickly recovered in 2021. In 2022, we observed an increase of 14 percent compared to the previous year.

Investments in fixed assets include buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and equipment—capturing the core of industrial investments.

Continuing the trend observed in 2013–19, investments may get to at least €14 billion per year in 2030.

Indicator definition
Gross fixed capital formation in the industrial sectors (including manufacturing, mining, power and electricity, and water supply) consists of investments in fixed assets, deducting disposals.
Progress assessment
The most recent data point is €12 billion of industry investment in fixed assets in 2022, based on Eurostat data. To assess progress, a linear curve replicating the trend registered in the 2013–19 period (a longer series) is drawn up to 2030. The arrival reference is €14 billion. To that curve, a standard deviation (based on the same 2013–19 historical data) is removed or added to create an on-track range. As the most recent progress is within that range, the status for the indicator is on track.
