I expected to be in a low-level position and have little interaction with clients or senior people. I was wrong. McKinsey provides huge development opportunities for a fresh graduate.

My path to McKinsey

When I left university, I wanted to create meaningful impact in the public sector but also have experience in the private sector. Everyone told me that McKinsey was the best place to do that in Malaysia. Since joining the firm, I have had exposure in a range of industries, functions, and geographies which I would not get in any other job.

Choosing McKinsey

I chose McKinsey because of the people. The people I met at McKinsey were driven, smart, and relatable. I felt like I could find a home here.

Expectations for McKinsey

I expected to be in a low-level position and have little interaction with clients or senior people. I was wrong. McKinsey provides huge development opportunities for a fresh graduate, from challenging senior partners in a problem-solving session to presenting to C-suite clients.

Charting your own course at McKinsey

When my dream project came up, my development group leader and colleagues were very supportive and encouraged me to do it. When I expressed a desire to work in a different geography, partners and professional-development managers have been helpful—and even connected me with their personal contacts and networks.

Work-life balance

I try to minimize travel and work in Malaysia by being more flexible with the type of projects I work in and by building strong relationships with partners in the KL office.

Advice for those considering McKinsey

Go for it. With enough practice and support, you can do it. Don’t ever live your life in regret of not trying.
