About Jeff Smith

Jeff leads across McKinsey’s Life Sciences and Private Capital practices. For more than 20 years, he has advised pharmaceutical and biotech executives on corporate strategy, asset and portfolio strategy, and R&D and medical affairs strategy and operations. He also partners with leading healthcare investors to conduct due diligence on investment opportunities, and to build growth strategies for portfolio companies that generate attractive returns.

Jeff brings deep experience helping clients navigate the long, complex, and capital-intensive journey of discovering, developing, manufacturing, and commercializing innovative medicines and medical products. Along the way, he has pioneered several of McKinsey’s client service capabilities, including cell and gene therapy work, research and early development work, and the Center for Asset Optimization, where he helps clients build value-maximizing strategies for assets, platforms, and portfolios.

Jeff has published extensively in McKinsey Quarterly, Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, and elsewhere, and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences on innovation and investing in healthcare.

Client work includes:

  • developed asset strategies and development plans for 200+ drugs, and portfolio and platform strategies for 20+ biopharma and biotech companies
  • helped leading biopharma companies and service providers (contract research organizations, contract development and manufacturing organizations, and commercialization partners) apply AI across the pharma value chain
  • partnered with 50+ biotechs on strategy and operations across the corporate life cycle, from seed stage through public company
  • supported leading investors on 100+ diligences spanning pharma service providers, life sciences tools, and related vendors.
