The global AI revolution is rapidly evolving, and US defense is emerging as a key battleground for the world’s leading companies. Almost two years before the release of ChatGPT,1 the Department of War was already home to more than 600 AI efforts2 touching everything from back-office work to acquisition, R&D, engineering, and warfighting.
While there has been tremendous investment and energy dedicated to AI efforts, we have yet to see the true potential of this technology. There have been some successes, with targeting, cyber defense, and select autonomy use cases showing promise, and the Department is gradually getting its arms around its data landscape. But when asked about AI, most defense leaders agree they are not yet seeing scaled impact.
Realizing AI’s potential in defense requires learning from the best of the private sector, assembling the right team, and moving from small pilots to at-scale transformation of key functions. This article explores approaches to support implementation, from shifting the mindset of leaders to implementing six key elements to rewire organizations with AI and digital solutions.
