Growing my skills—and sense of self—through a McKinsey internship

I graduated with a bachelor of science in international management from Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. Now, I am pursuing my master’s in management at Johannes-Gutenberg University Mainz and volunteering as the head of finance and networking for a nonprofit that provides free legal counsel to refugees and migrants.

I found out about the internship with McKinsey when I was contacted by someone from the firm through LinkedIn. Honestly, at the time, I wasn’t planning on doing another internship. I had just moved cities and started my master’s. However, after learning more about the program, I grew convinced it was the right step for me. All three interviewers were kind and transparent, and I enjoyed each conversation. Ultimately, I joined a wonderful team as an intern in the Risk & Resilience practice.

My work at McKinsey

I am part of the entire recruiting lifecycle. My responsibilities include talking to candidates, sharing my excitement about the Risk practice, leading internal initiatives and external recruiting events, and helping candidates prepare for their interviews. It’s both fun and rewarding to see them do well during the process.

I love how everything I do has purpose and makes a difference, even if it is not immediately visible. That is also why I enjoy being part of broader teams, organizing events, and learning about diversity recruiting.

Expanding my passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion

I grew up in Germany in a family comprised of different cultures and have struggled to understand my place in the world. As a first-generation university student, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are close to my heart. McKinsey has given me the opportunity to access amazing resources and connect with all kinds of people.

I made it my personal goal to learn as much as I can about DEI so I can apply it to my work here and become more inclusive in the way I interact with candidates and colleagues. Whenever I can, I join events and Zoom sessions on DEI topics. For example, I have attended events for McKinsey Black Network and on social mobility efforts. I have also joined an amazing group of people who identify as multiracial, with whom I can share my story and learn from others. It has been great to feel a sense of belonging and friendship within this global community.

I feel so connected to my colleagues from around the world. I meet people from different countries, and I feel they understand me. They share my struggles, growing up with different cultures and not knowing where they belong, and they share the joy of having diverse influences, learning, and keeping an open mind.

The feeling of community at McKinsey is special. I have never experienced interconnectedness lived and encouraged as strongly as I have here.

More about me

In my free time, I love to travel solo or with my partner. Since I am an enthusiastic foodie, my main goal on each trip is to eat as many traditional dishes as I possibly can. I then try to recreate those dishes at home, which makes me feel like I am keeping the culture with me.
