Saying we instead of you

Tell us about yourself

I am Nicolas, a Marketing & Sales associate in the Paris office. I joined in September 2017 as an experienced hire, after five years working for global fast-moving consumer goods companies in marketing positions.

Why did you decide to apply to McKinsey?

When I saw McKinsey was looking for experienced hires in Marketing & Sales, I was happily surprised. I was interested in a consulting career, but not ready to give up my passion for marketing. I took my chance and joined the firm six months later.

What do you enjoy most at work?

That moment when I start feeling part of the client’s team. Saying “we” instead of “you,” thinking together and working hand in hand. This is the moment when I feel I can make a difference. It’s impressive how fast and natural the shift is: after a few days of onboarding, you’re already caring and fighting for the client’s future.

Tell us about the most difficult situation you dealt with.

I was in a meeting once where two managers from the client side strongly disagreed. It came to loud arguing. As a McKinsey team, being in the middle of such a confrontation felt strange. Step by step, we managed to identify and articulate all the issues both managers were facing and align on a plan. Together we brought the meeting to a much more constructive place.

What are you most proud of so far?

Joining McKinsey as an experienced hire gives me more perspective into how to serve my clients. Having worked 5 years on the client side sometimes allows you to better understand their “language” and their issues . I am proud of the career choices I made before going into consulting. I would make them again, as ultimately, they brought me to the place where I am now.
