Clay is a partner in McKinsey’s Life Sciences Practice and Private Capital Practice. He advises medtech, biopharma, and service providers—and the investors who back them—on strategy, capital allocation, and sustained value creation. Much of his current work is at the intersection of AI and commercial performance, including redesigning how medical device sales forces engage surgeons. Clay also brings 20 years of experience in corporate finance and investing. He advises clients on their investment theses and has led complex due diligence processes, working closely with private equity firms from initial sector screening through post-close value creation. He previously spent several years in McKinsey’s Japan office, where he led the private equity practice and grew the office’s life sciences client base.
His recent client work includes:
• building an AI solution for a global medical device company’s sales force, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of how the team engages surgeons
• developing the investment thesis for a large private equity firm across life sciences and healthcare, then leading due diligence on several targets across the landscape
• advising a Japan-headquartered medical technology company on global strategy and organizational effectiveness across its equipment and services teams
• shaping the strategy and go-to-market model for a high-growth pharmaceutical services provider
