About Clay

Clay brings hands-on experience to the task of understanding and optimizing business value. In the healthcare sector, he helps pharmaceutical and medical-device companies pursue growth opportunities, including making strategic acquisitions. Clay helps private-equity investors drive successful diligence efforts across industries, leading to sound and profitable transactions.

Since joining McKinsey, Clay has led initiatives for pharmaceutical and medical-device companies across the entire value chain. This work has included promoting growth by optimizing product portfolios, developing innovative go-to-market models, and transforming organizational capabilities. Leveraging his knowledge of the sector, Clay also helps private-equity firms identify and evaluate potential life-science assets for mid- to long-term investments.

Examples of his recent client work include the following:

  • developing a strategy and road map for a life-sciences company to improve top-line growth, including prioritizing investments in product development
  • leading a due diligence effort and subsequent merger-integration program for a major medical-device company, helping to achieve strong share-price growth in 6 months
  • designing a go-to-market strategy for a contract development and manufacturing organization in order to accelerate growth and better penetrate the small biopharma segment
  • conducting due diligence and valuation for a biotechnology target specializing in orphan diseases, including interviewing doctors, payors, and regulatory experts to forecast revenue drivers
  • advising the new CEO of a pharmaceutical-services company and building a road map and a portfolio of strategic growth initiatives to expand the company’s value proposition to its customer base
  • designing the organizational structure to help an innovative biotechnology company scale effectively and leverage capabilities across business units

Before joining McKinsey, Clay worked at a private-equity firm and global asset manager as an investor, where he directed business, financial, and industry due diligence, monitored investments, and evaluated investment opportunities. He also worked as an investment-banking analyst for a leading financial-services company, where he provided merger-transaction and corporate-finance advisory services to middle-market companies across several industries.
