Despite a modest rise in optimism about their financial situation, consumers are still spooked by potentially rising prices. Our latest ConsumerWise sentiment survey shows that consumers are both splurging selectively and trading down: 40 percent of consumers say they plan to splurge in the coming months, but 79 percent are trading down to save money when they shop. “Overall, consumers are being more discerning in their spending,” write McKinsey’s Kari Alldredge and Warren Teichner. “They’re actively seeking more bang for their buck.” Will Halloween spending lead to frighteningly lighter wallets this year?
