Four years after joining the firm, I am still amazed by the amount of time and resources McKinsey invests in our personal and professional development.
As a corporate attorney, I had a first-hand view of major corporate transactions but found myself yearning to get closer to the crux of the decision-making process. I have always been excited by opportunities to challenge myself with the unfamiliar. As I dug deeper into what it’s like to work at McKinsey, there was no question in my mind that I would get amazing business training and take my client counselling and leadership skills to the next level. I was also intrigued by the thought of having a meaningful impact on an exceptionally broad range of topics spanning every major industry and function.
After nearly 2 years of projects in a variety of industries, I began to focus on private equity and banking, with an emphasis on wealth and asset management. I now serve industry leaders on topics from improving operational effectiveness and efficiency to developing new growth strategies and evaluating potential acquisition targets. While the work is diverse, there are several common threads that keep me excited about being part of the firm, including the collaborative way in which we partner with clients and incredibly supportive McKinsey team members.
McKinsey gave me excellent support and training to make the transition to a consulting career. For me, it began with a 3-week “mini-MBA” program, which was a great introduction to the range of personalities you can find working here. In my program there was an economist from DC, a theoretical physicist from Hamburg, and a theater director from Zimbabwe. It was an unforgettable experience and I am still close friends with many of the colleagues I met there.
Four years after joining the firm, I am still amazed by the amount of time and resources McKinsey invests in the personal and professional development of all of us.
Although I had expected to be surrounded by a diverse, accomplished group of peers when I joined McKinsey, I never anticipated the sense of community I would experience. I felt it when I joined the Toronto office, again when I transferred to the New York office, and consistently as I’ve progressed and shaped my career. It’s a remarkably supportive environment, and everyone is invested in each other’s success. I truly have never seen anything like it.
