Senior FellowLondon

Leads research into business topics affecting performance and societal impact, including the business case and best practices in promoting diversity and inclusion; engaging with clients and wider stakeholders to drive change

Sundiatu is a visiting senior fellow at the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), our business and economics research arm. She leads distinctive research and engages with stakeholders on topics relating to strengthening economic performance and societal impact across consumption and demand, technology innovation and productivity, diversity and inclusion (D&I), and the evolution of health systems.

Sundiatu works with MGI leaders to identify opportunities for and conduct research into issues shaping the evolution of the global economy, providing a rich fact base and analytical insight into support decision making on critical management and policy issues, by stakeholders across the private, public, and social sectors. This includes research into issues that will shape the economy and organizational performance post-crisis.

In recent years Sundiatu has coled the firm’s “Diversity Matters”—a multi-year research effort on the link between diversity and financial performance and on best practices in driving lasting change to diverse representation and inclusion within organizations—deploying a fact-based, analytical approach. Recent publications include Diversity Wins,The future of women at work in the United Kingdom, and Delivering through Diversity. Sundiatu has worked with our senior partner leadership and colleagues across practices to engage widely on D&I with clients, external partners, and internal client service teams. This has included helping clients understand the improvement opportunity through articulating bespoke, business-led D&I aspirations and deploying diagnostic approaches combining talent metrics with semi-quantitative and qualitative assessments of employee experience in order to lay out the nature and scale of the gap to close. Drawing on an extensive proprietary evidence base and benchmarks from research as well as our firm’s client work, Sundiatu has supported clients in crafting transformation programs tailored to their needs. She also continues to play a key role in advocating widely for D&I across public fora and the media, helping influence business leaders, government policy-makers, and other decision-makers worldwide.

Sundiatu has also served healthcare clients extensively across pharmaceuticals and medical products, as well as health systems and services. Her focus has been primarily strategy, supporting health systems in developing approaches to deliver quality and productivity improvements through service redesign and patient engagement. She has also helped pharma companies improve patient outcomes and increase market access through innovative payment models and delivering “beyond the pill” services.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Sundiatu worked with a leading Swiss pharmaceuticals company as a senior project manager in drug development, and with Geneva University Hospital as a clinical research coordinator.
