As McKinsey’s chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer, I am passionate about our efforts to advance gender equity at our firm – and in society more broadly – and excited to share information with you about McKinsey Women.
I love what I do at the firm, I love my clients. And I love the positive impact that I am able to have working in partnership with so many leaders – including a lot of women! That love is what helped me to become the first woman partner in Spain, what has kept me engaged at the firm for over 20 years, and also what fuels my passion to help other women succeed at the firm. I know firsthand the benefits that women and diverse teams can bring to our clients.
But it’s not just my opinion. I’m proud to belong to a firm that has invested over $20 million and over a decade in research around the positive business impacts of diversity and inclusion. We have data that shows an increasing connection between women’s inclusion and business success. And it makes sense. Diverse companies gain greater access to talent, increased ability to achieve product market fit, better problem solving and decision making abilities and an enhanced license to operate.
If you are interested in this area of research, we have two pieces you might like. The first is Diversity Wins, our work on why inclusion and diversity matters to global businesses; the second piece is our most recent Women in the Workplace report, conducted in partnership with LeanIn.org, the largest comprehensive study of the state of women in corporate America. Through these and other efforts in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, we’re helping drive the global dialogue in a positive way on women and their participation in the economy and business.
This work is important to us as a firm and also to our clients, who understand the way diversity can support their growth. Diversity isn’t an extra, it’s an imperative. To make sure that we are tapping all the benefits of diversity to better serve our clients – and to create a place where the world’s most talented women want to work -- we know that we need to create an inclusive environment where women thrive. Our programs include best-in-class leadership development, flexibility, parental leave, inclusive leadership and anti-bias training, all of which contribute to an environment where women and men experience the sponsorship they need to grow. Our program helping new parents ramp back on following leave is a particular source of pride for me – I’m proud to have helped build the program that I wish I’d had when I became a new parent and a new partner at the same time.
These programs are larger than just one senior partner, however. From our strong group of women senior partners to a dynamic new generation of women business analysts, there are so many McKinsey women helping shape the firm of the future.
