Fresh out of college and hired during the COVID-19 pandemic, McKinsey gave Arzu a solid foundation for success along with exciting work and positive impact opportunities in the country she loves.

McKinsey stood out to me as a firm that looks for problem solvers and decision makers, and that’s exactly how I want to operate and grow.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration from ADA University, which is in my hometown of Baku, Azerbaijan, I joined McKinsey in September 2020.

This is my first full-time job, although I’ve done prior internships.

Choosing McKinsey

I networked a great deal during my last year at university, and the more people I networked with, the more I realized that McKinsey colleagues were the people I wanted to be around. They are passionate about their work, goal driven, and focused.

McKinsey stood out to me as a firm that looks for problem solvers and decision makers, and that’s exactly how I want to operate and grow.

While I considered a major oil and gas company and some others in professional services, I joined McKinsey because of the wide range of learning opportunities. Plus, with McKinsey I knew I could have real impact on the strategic development of my home country and beyond.

Settling into the role with support

When you begin your career and start new projects, you can feel anxious. On my teams, my colleagues create a safe zone where I can ask questions and get clear answers. There’s an understanding that all experts were once beginners and the best experts continue to learn. That attitude energizes me.

Life outside of work

McKinsey knows we all need boundaries for work and for life. My team cares about me, how I’m feeling, how I want to grow, and the time I spend beyond our team—including interests like video editing, building Legos, and creating scrapbooks.
