Evelina is a London-based solution consultant with McKinsey's Oil & Gas practice. Here, she describes the innovative culture and supportive people she’s found at the firm.
Interviewer: What brought you to McKinsey?
Evelina: The opportunity to combine McKinsey’s best practices with a startup’s freedom and enthusiasm. I engage with clients through the classic structure of a management consulting engagement, and I innovate new ways you can help clients that have never tested before.
Interviewer: What keeps you here?
Evelina: The people – each of my colleagues has taught me something new about myself and my capabilities. And the challenge. We are constantly innovating new ways to work with clients and developing new software tools and analytic capabilities to push the boundaries.
Interviewer: Tell us about your most memorable engagement.
Evelina: We were in the process of engaging stakeholders to test the concept for a new product. After some initial conversations, we realized most stakeholders saw the value proposition of the product differently than we did. We went back to the drawing board, incorporated all the feedback we had received, and redesigned the product from scratch to better reflect their market needs. It took a lot of effort but it was innovative and creative.
Interviewer: Tell us about the support you receive at McKinsey.
Evelina: I have a wonderful team and caring mentors who are always there to advise me and hear me out. They have helped me define my own space. At times, I have doubted whether I was a good fit for my role; we sit together, discuss my aspirations, and redefine my role to better address my goals.
Interviewer: What’s your best piece of advice for a woman considering a role at McKinsey?
Evelina: Forget everything you have heard about how McKinsey works, and be prepared for entrepreneurial spirit, drive, and lots of self-motivation.
Interviewer: What are you passionate about outside of work?
Evelina: Travelling, diving, yoga, dancing, and food – definitely food!
