Reflecting on my first project at McKinsey, I had the incredible opportunity to lead a transformative retail banking study in Vietnam. This 8-month endeavor tested our team’s resilience and determination, but through unwavering collaboration, unwavering support, and unwavering perseverance, we not only overcame every challenge but also delivered truly impactful results that reshaped the retail banking sector. With a diverse team, comprising individuals from different backgrounds and a perfect balance of gender representation, we harnessed the power of our unique perspectives to craft comprehensive strategies, innovative designs, and groundbreaking implementations. The camaraderie and unwavering support within our team made this journey an extraordinary and deeply rewarding experience, reminding us that when we come together with a shared purpose, there are no limits to what we can achieve.
Team Support and Lessons Learned
Throughout my time at McKinsey, my team has been my main source of support. In the early months, my engagement manager (EM) and buddy guided me through the consulting toolkit and helped me get started smoothly. As I took on more responsibilities and began leading the team, my two executive directors (EDs) provided consistent support, guidance, and encouragement. They empowered me to propose and test new ideas, which allowed me to overcome challenging situations and grow both professionally and personally.
The most important lesson I have learned since joining McKinsey is the significance of adaptability. Our work requires us to quickly switch between different knowledge areas, collaborate with various colleagues, and serve diverse clients. This ability to adapt has played a crucial role in my growth and has taught me the value of continuous learning and flexibility.
