Back to Accelerating a Sustainable Future

Finding your role in sustainability at McKinsey

You can either apply as a generalist consultant, where part of your work may be focused on sustainability, or, if you have industry experience, you can apply directly to one of our sustainability-focused roles.

Please note this is not an exhaustive list of sustainability career opportunities. Where roles are only available in certain offices, this will be made clear.

Sustainability roles

As a consultant in the Sustainability Practice, you’ll work in teams and be instrumental in supporting leading organizations around the world achieve their sustainability and decarbonization goals.  You’ll join one of two pathways including the Solutions or Expert pathways.

  • As a Solutions consultant, you’ll specialize in bringing data-driven insights to clients by developing, owning, and delivering the next wave of asset-based solutions to help them across their sustainability strategy and transformation journeys.
  • As an Expert consultant, you’ll dedicate part of your time to supporting our client service due to your well-defined knowledge expertise, and part of your time to building our knowledge and capabilities in a particular domain.

Generalist consulting roles

As a generalist Analyst or Associate, you will help our clients in the private, public, and social sectors solve pressing problems across a broad range of topics. You will also work with a range of firm experts from data scientists and researchers to software and app designers.

After a year as a generalist consultant, you may opt to join our one-year fellowship program in our McKinsey Sustainability Practice, where you will focus on a mix of client work and knowledge development. As a fellow, some examples of client projects could include helping develop a sustainability strategy, a decarbonization roadmap for a consumer-goods client, or working with a bank on the climate-risk exposure within investment portfolios.
