Finding your passion for sustainability and greener businesses

I joined McKinsey straight out of university and spent about three years as a generalist, where I worked with clients across industries and sectors.

Trying new things

As I started my fourth year, McKinsey was expanding its research in and it’s work with more clients on sustainability strategy and transformations. I was inspired by our work in this space, and I wanted more project experience in this area. The firm is a great place where you can explore different paths and interests. I applied to the firm's Sustainability Fellowship Program because I wanted to do meaningful work that would improve the state of the planet for future generations.

Finding my passion

I am extremely grateful for support from mentors and the professional development team during the application process. My development growth leader (DGL) was very supportive of me trying something new and emphasized the importance of exploring opportunities to broaden my perspectives. The professional development team and mentors connected me with sustainability projects so I could learn more. Through conversations with consultants and experts, I knew the fellowship program would provide the platform to make a lasting, sustainable difference for future generations.

Support to succeed

Since joining the fellowship program, I have worked with teams to design long-term sustainability strategies with governments, electricity, and energy clients. These include setting emissions targets, and crafting initiatives and implementation roadmaps. I was initially nervous about joining these projects given my limited knowledge and experience. My worries were quickly allayed by supportive team members. On many projects, senior colleagues carved out time to explain key sustainability concepts, so I could deepen my understanding. This was challenging with COVID-19 and remote working but team members were patient, especially given that the virtual environment really tested our drawing skills. Surprisingly, the connectivity was amazing; we managed to have fun as a team and formed strong lasting relationships. We continue to stay in touch after projects, and check in on one another regularly. The caring and inclusive environment at McKinsey boosted my confidence and excited me about sharing my ideas during client discussions.

At McKinsey, there are many opportunities to learn from experts across the globe. I work with a group of amazing individuals, who are just as passionate about sustainability as I am. On each of my projects, our team taps into the expertise of colleagues in Europe, North America and Asia. I love that we can leverage examples of what worked well in different countries to deliver fact-based insights to our clients, such as marginal abatement cost curves to quantify the impact of decarbonization levers.

I have just started my journey with the Sustainability practice, and I am proud of the work we have done so far, like influencing an electricity provider to commit to a net zero target and furthering its renewable energy capacity plans to provide clear power to the country.
