Building better capital projects through sustainability benchmarks

As the world transitions to a more sustainable economy with net-zero targets, there will be an increased focus on capital investments and project execution practices. To realize these goals in capital projects and infrastructure, industry leaders must establish a clear methodology to measure, evaluate, and improve upon key sustainability performance metrics.

In a first-of-its-kind survey, we asked capital project leaders about how they approach sustainability. The preliminary findings suggest that industry players recognize sustainability’s criticality to project success—but how it’s measured is inconsistent. From there, the results suggest that wielding benchmarking through a sustainability index to prompt action, particularly in priority areas of environmental and economic sustainability, could be a helpful next step in achieving a more sustainable future for capital projects.
