Gerard is a partner in our San Francisco office and a serial company founder, CEO, board member, and investor, with two unicorn exits.
After spending three decades building and scaling businesses at the forefront of the digital revolution, Gerard joined McKinsey to found and lead a new practice focused on green growth. He helps ambitious start-ups and corporations tackle the climate crisis while developing profitable new revenue streams and inspiring the next generation of leaders. He is also a leader in Leap by McKinsey, our digital business-building practice.
Gerard serves clients across a wide array of industries, including energy, transportation, manufacturing, construction, mining, consumer goods, fintech, entertainment, and big tech. He supports corporations, start-ups, and investors along the journey to achieve sustainable growth. Some of his recent client examples include the following:
- defining science-based, net-zero growth plans for portfolios and businesses
- creating and scaling new climate businesses that offer the means to reduce emissions, remove atmospheric carbon, track and trade carbon credits, and adapt to the changing climate
- reducing scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions from core operations, purchased services, and the full value chain
- accessing capital to fund the pivot to green, scale new businesses, and maximize shareholder value
- creating and scaling a carbon-sequestration business
- repositioning and scaling a green cement business
- defining and implementing the vision of a global green jet-fuel business to accelerate its scale-up
Earlier in his career, Gerard helped found the marketing analytics function at a consumer-goods company, and led a digital transformation for a retailer. He has a master’s in operations research and game theory from the University of Strathclyde and a bachelor’s in mathematics from the University of Manchester.
