The McKinsey Health Institute collaborated with West Health to develop the Primary Care Access and Capacity Explorer, part of Primary care, reimagined: Workforce and care model innovation in a modern age. This interactive article developed by MHI and West provides stakeholders insight on where access challenges in primary care are most acute and how they may evolve over time. Users can also explore future scenarios of how investing in the primary care system, through workforce revitalization, specialty care innovation, and other system-wide reforms can both expand access and drive system savings. Primary care is chronically underfunded in the US, driving persistent gaps between demand and provider capacity, despite the outsized impact that it has on both long-term health outcomes and healthcare expenditures. Using this resource, policymakers, executives, and researchers can help strengthen the argument for investing in the future of primary care and towards a more resilient healthcare system.
