Coalition for Mental Health Investment
Our collaboration
The McKinsey Health Institute, in partnership with the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance, the Clinton Global Initiative, Kokoro, and Wellcome Trust, launched the Coalition for Mental Health Investment (CMHI). The Coalition’s vision is to ensure that within a generation, investment for mental health matches the scale of global need. Objectives of the Coalition include connecting leaders across sectors with others and with curated opportunities that accelerate our vision, inspiring investment globally by highlighting the business case and impact potential of mental health investment, de-risking mental health investment through championing of innovative financing mechanisms and integrating mental health into other areas of work.
Since launching in 2024, the Coalition has begun to translate its vision into action – connecting leaders across sectors, building practical tools, and elevating mental health investment in global conversations on philanthropy, impact, and innovative finance. CMHI published Keeping Investment in Mind: Strategies for Financing Mental Health, a guidebook that maps the traditional and innovative mechanisms funders can use to de-risk investment across a value chain. Its Funding Mental Health: The Inside Scoop interview series shares practical insights from leaders on topics ranging from funder collaboration and integration to investment in mental health innovation. CMHI also led the development of Mental Health Integration for Impact, a report on how embedding mental health within existing funding portfolios can strengthen outcomes in women’s health, child and youth development, and climate resilience. The Coalition has also engaged leaders through major global convenings, including the Skoll World Forum and Philanthropy Asia Summit, helping bring mental health investment into broader conversations on philanthropy, impact, and innovative finance.
CMHI also serves as Pathfinder of the World Economic Forum’s Brain Economy Action Forum, supporting the development of global insights and helping elevate the brain economy agenda internationally.
