Helping US healthcare stakeholders understand the human side of the COVID-19 crisis: McKinsey Consumer Healthcare Insights

Healthcare stakeholders on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic must understand not only the disease itself, but also consumers’ questions, concerns, and behaviors. Our recent rapid-research effort in the US provides some early insights.

McKinsey’s seventh COVID-19-focused consumer health survey, conducted September 5–7, provides an updated view of consumer health-related experiences and perceptions. Respondents continue to experience anxiety and distress related to COVID-19 and are gaining confidence in visiting healthcare providers. Additionally, they remain interested in a COVID-19 vaccine and are open to many sites to receive it. Masks are now the most important safeguard in returning to activities. In order to feel secure in returning to work, respondents said several deterrents would need to be addressed, including a lack of employer safeguards, ability to work from home, and lack of childcare/need for virtual school.
