Spirituality around the world

The importance of spiritual health varies a lot for people from one country to another. In surveying individuals from 26 countries, Nigeria had the highest proportion of respondents who valued spiritual health, while the Netherlands had the smallest. It is important to understand these regional differences to have a deeper understanding of how to advance holistic health, note senior partners Erica Hutchins Coe and Kana Enomoto and coauthors.

The importance of spiritual health among respondents varied from 41 to 85 percent, depending on where the respondents reside.

A segmented bar chart shows survey respondents’ perception of the importance of spiritual health in their lives, with 1 bar segment indicating “extremely important” and the other indicating “very important.” Overall importance combined at the upper end tops out at 85%, with the lower end being 41%. The data are also broken down by region, with Africa and the Middle East clustered at the upper end of spiritual importance, and Europe at the lower end with North and South America, and Asia–Pacific in the middle.
