Pharmacies could be a growth area for players across different health systems, from for-profit and not-for-profit entities to academic medical centers. However, leaders will likely need to address a set of pressing challenges, including supply chain disruptions. According to a survey of pharmacy leaders within the health system, partner Will Weinstein and colleagues find that manufacturing shortages top the list of potential threats to their operations. Leaders could boost supply chain resilience by improving their sourcing, contracting, and distribution capabilities.

Stacked bar charts show health system pharmacy leaders’ ratings of the perceived threat of or their level of organizational readiness to handle a supply chain disruptor, where a rating of 1 is good and 5 is bad. Each row represents a disruptor, with the first 2 considered the top threats. Manufacturing and production shortages, and lack of adequate forecasting or visibility into supply chain disruptions are rated a 5 for level of threat by 55% and 30% of respondents, respectively. For level of organizational readiness, only 5% and 13% of respondents, respectively, gave a rating of 1.
