You may find that organizations treat alumni relations as an afterthought that begins when employment ends. It’s a transactional, keep-in-touch exercise that often consists of occasional emails, networking events, or an alumni directory.
At McKinsey, we see it entirely differently. We believe that once you are part of our firm, you are part of our community for life. That’s not just a sentiment but a central pillar of our firm’s mission to help exceptional people grow into leaders—and we don’t believe that commitment should end on someone’s last day.
That’s why we’ve built Alumni Relations not as a function for former employees, but as an extension of the same promise we make from day one. It’s a commitment we’ve upheld for more than 100 years—long before websites or social media—and today we continue it across a global network of more than 70,000 alumni in over 130 countries.
Career support for every stage
Our McKinsey Career Network (MCN) team is composed of dedicated, full-time professionals whose sole focus is to ensure that an alumni's McKinsey affiliation remains the most powerful strategic asset in their lifelong career journey long after they depart the firm.
As one executive alum recently noted, “The McKinsey Career Network is one of the biggest differentiators between McKinsey and the rest. None of our competitors have the breadth and depth of this type of support. Every time I made a career transition, and I’ve had three, MCN was there for me. And with each transition, I became a client every time.”
Recognizing that modern executive careers are rarely linear, we provide highly tailored advisory support designed for every stage of the journey. Alums making their first move out of consulting require a fundamentally different approach than seasoned executives evaluating a C-suite role.
For early- and midcareer professionals, we look beyond foundational resume advice to provide insights into hiring trends, translate former consultants’ value proposition to the external market, and help map their leadership journeys. Through our new What’s your next brilliant move webinar series, executive alumni panelists share both their insights and practice guidance on how they have successfully navigated career journeys. From growth leadership and P&L ownership roles to how the path to CEO can look different from alum to alum, these sessions inspire our global community to think about their next career move in profoundly different ways.
Beyond providing 1:1 advisory support, MCN functions as a high-powered, globally connected talent exchange. By integrating with the world’s leading hiring organizations and executive search firms, we have built an unparalleled pipeline of opportunities from early-tenure to C-suite roles. This ecosystem is a structural advantage in that recruiters look to us for immediate access to unrivaled strategic talent, while our alumni have a direct path to the most highly sought-after roles in the global market.
Continuous learning that doesn’t stop when employment does
Our investment in growth doesn’t stop with career services. Through our broader alumni program, we offer continuous learning through live, candid, interactive webinars and deep-dive sessions with the firm’s flagship knowledge and thought leaders. It’s an insider’s view the general public can’t get, spanning AI, geopolitics, corporate venture building, and many more topics—all archived and available on demand when departing colleagues and alumni need it most. As one alum put it, “The greatest value I perceive today is the opportunity to learn about the new knowledge and insights developed within the firm and by its leaders.”
As a team-based organization, we understand that strong teams matter. So we not only let alumni bring guests and colleagues to these events but also offer alumni and their colleagues discounted access to our proprietary management training programs, helping their teams upskill the same way our alumni did while at our firm.
Where we kept AI out of the room
Two tools now sit behind the scenes of recruiting. An AI agent drafts responses to candidates' routine questions, which recruiters still review before anything goes out, so nothing falls through the cracks. A Candidate Experience Dashboard tracks signals of how candidates are experiencing the process in near real time, so recruiters can step in personally if something looks off. Neither tool talks to a candidate directly. Both exist to buy recruiters back the time for the conversations that need a person. What candidates noticed, in the end, were the recruiters who had more time for them, not the tools working quietly in the background.
A flywheel powered by the community
Investing in alumni isn’t an end in itself; it’s a critical part of our people strategy. When you continue investing in people after they leave, the value compounds. As alumni succeed, they reinforce McKinsey’s reputation as a place where exceptional people become influential leaders. That attracts exceptional talent looking for organizations where they can accelerate their careers. Alumni go on to lead organizations, creating opportunities for departing colleagues and fellow alumni, reinforcing a flywheel that attracts, develops, and supports exceptional people.
But the flywheel doesn’t work because our firm creates every opportunity. It works because the community also creates value for itself. The strongest networks aren’t orchestrated from the center; they emerge from the members. Our job is to build the infrastructure and let the network do the rest.
To enable this, we built McKinsey Network, a social platform available exclusively to colleagues and alumni. Through a shared directory, members can find and connect with one another, create groups, collaborate around shared interests, and exchange opportunities. Along the way, they mentor, introduce, advise, hire, and learn from one another in ways no centralized program could replicate. By enabling those connections rather than directing them, we make a global network of more than 70,000 alumni feel smaller, more personal, and more useful—all built on shared experience and common values.
Building for life
We are often asked how to replicate this, and the honest answer is: There is no shortcut, but there is a blueprint. Staff and fund it like you mean it with a team solely focused on alumni success. Meet people where they are, giving them what they need most at each stage. Keep delivering value over the long run, so alumni know you’re committed. And build an infrastructure that empowers the network, because the most valuable connections are the ones members make among themselves.
Do this consistently over the years, and you’ll stop measuring success by how well you stay in touch and start measuring it by how successful your alumni are.
