Solve It UK

Be a part of a team that helps a non-profit shape its future.

Solve It is a competition for university students who would like to use their skills to help a non-profit to address some of their current strategic and operational challenges. Participating in this event will give you the opportunity to learn, meet like-minded peers, and do meaningful work that will have a social impact.

Competition details

Initial application – (Applications are now closed)

  • Apply, as an individual, by submitting a 1-2-page CV and up to 250 words about your motivation to be part of this competition.
  • All applicants will receive an update on the status of their application by the end of March.
  • If your application is successful, we will divide you into small university based teams for the first round.

First round – April 2019, online/virtual

  • Each team will receive an assignment based on a key challenge facing the non-profit’s leadership.
  • Teams will then work together to analyse the situation and submit their proposed solution electronically.
  • Selected teams will be invited to the final round which will take place in person in London.

Final round – 17th May 2019, London

  • Teams will travel* to London and will be given a new assignment by the same non-profit organisation.
  • You’ll spend the day coming up with a proposed solution to the challenge, supported by McKinsey consultants.
  • Solutions will be presented to a panel of McKinsey consultants and the non-profit leaders who will determine the winning team.
  • Each member of the winning team will receive £2,000 in addition to a McKinsey mentor to support them for the next six months of their academic and professional journey.

*For participants invited to attend the final round in London, travel expenses will be covered.

Who is eligible?

The competition is open to current undergraduate and master’s degree students graduating in 2019 or later from one of the universities listed below. Please note that you are not eligible for this competition if you are currently studying for an MBA or enrolled at a university that is not listed.

You must be a student at one of the following universities:

University of Bath

University of Edinburgh
University of Exeter
University of Glasgow
University of Leeds
University of Manchester
University of Nottingham
University of Warwick
University of York

If you have previously applied for a role or event with McKinsey, you are still welcome to apply. All applications will be reviewed regardless of prior applications or their outcomes.
