Transformation & Turnaround

Consultant - McKinsey Transformation (MT)

Job ID: 46559
  • Tokyo

Who You'll Work With

You’ll join our global McKinsey Transformation (MT) team in our Tokyo office.
MT is a unit of McKinsey, founded in 2010, that focuses exclusively on holistic transformations and corporate restructuring. We help clients drive rapid and dramatic performance improvement, plus provide a full suite of services to support companies facing liquidity issues or insolvency. To do so, we pair experienced professionals who are drawn from industry, private equity, and the restructuring ecosystem with our firm’s global network of industry and functional experts.
MT has two service lines: Turnarounds & Transformations (T&T) and Corporate Restructuring (CR). While the CR service line focuses on leading complex corporate restructuring programs at companies facing acute performance issues, liquidity concerns, potential covenant violations, and other issues that are destabilizing to the enterprise, the T&T service line focuses on driving rapid performance improvement for any business with significant performance improvement potential and an aspirational leader (ranging from distressed to “good to great” situations).
We are doers, and we work closely with clients to execute the steps needed to achieve extraordinary performance improvements. With ~150 dedicated MT consultants and ~250 generalist consultants among our global affiliates, we serve clients in more than 50 countries, many of which are among the largest impact situations for the firm globally.
When you join McKinsey, you are joining a firm whose culture is distinctive and inclusive. We will accelerate your development as a leader to create positive, enduring change in the world.

What You'll Do

You’ll serve clients in a project manager capacity, helping them in their turnaround and transformation efforts.
In this role, you will serve clients with the MT recipe of leveraging a holistic, execution-centric approach, providing interim management and transformation leadership capabilities and integrating the best of the firm. To achieve proven results, you will apply all levers, not only cost but also including revenue, strategy, organization and capital. Your client engagements will often span 12 to 24 months and they will include three phases: independent diligence phase (6-8 weeks), bottom up phase (6-8 weeks) and implementation (6-12+ months).
Specifically, you will operate as a project manager for one or more of these phases and you will manage a team of consultants focused on a T&T engagement. By combining a strategic perspective with disciplined implementation, you will lead this team to identify the strategic, operational, organizational and financial levers that will deliver rapid and dramatic client impact. Throughout this process, you will apply our results-oriented and proprietary MT solutions which are backed by tools, benchmarks and methodologies.
You will be responsible for delivering the right transformation process, integrating it across multiple workstreams, establishing the right mindset based on the latest performance and mobilizing the entire business to achieve and sustain value. You will also be responsible for ensuring that the team fully and properly leverages the capabilities of MT globally across both of the MT service lines.
More broadly, you will be responsible for the overall execution and success of these large-scale turnarounds and transformations. You will leverage a broad range of leadership and influencing styles, ranging from respected manager to motivational senior coach, and you will display high energy and resilience in ambiguous and faced-paced contexts. Occasionally, you will play an interim management role for the client as well.
