Who You'll Work With

You’ll be based in our Tokyo office as part of our Chemicals practice. The Chemicals practice is a global network of chemical experts and practitioners. At any point in time, approximately 250 consultants are involved in chemicals-related client projects. In the past five years alone, our Chemicals practice has supported clients across the world on more than 1,000 strategic, operations, commercial, and organization projects

What You'll Do

You will be able to develop and continuously deepen your expertise about the chemicals industry through this role, specializing in petrochemicals/commodity markets and developing your problem-solving skills as well as teamwork, team leadership, and client relationship skills. 
You will work closely with senior petrochemicals practitioners on client engagements as well as on state-of-the-art knowledge and analytical tool development. We will help you develop world class skills in microeconomic analysis of commodity chemicals.
A deep understanding of your specific content area, along with skills development and application, will form the basis for advancement. This career path can reach McKinsey partnership or senior/master expert levels.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree; advanced degree a plus ideally in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, or related area of study
  • 5+ years (2+ years with advance degree) of relevant experience in strategy or commercial roles within a chemicals company or other experience in consulting, equity research, industry analyst or investment banking in the chemicals industry
  • In-depth understanding of key products, value chains, applications, and technology platforms in specialty chemicals, advanced materials, and plastics
  • General understanding of chemicals/materials industry landscape - key players, trends, and end markets
  • Experience participating in or leading strategic projects, change management programs, commercial improvement programs and/or operational improvement projects is a plus
  • Strong business and industry acumen and problem solving
  • Strong interpersonal communication (verbal and written) skills in English and Japanese
