Remembering my first project five years later

I always wanted to work on challenging problems, provide best-in-class solutions, and have a positive impact on people’s lives. The desire to do work that makes a difference led me to McKinsey five years ago.

Developing a consulting mindset

Since joining the firm, I have been part of numerous projects, but my first project is my most memorable. The client was a major telecom company, and I was a data engineer on a global team of data scientists and domain experts.

Our goal was to develop a complete AI solution to optimize the company’s network and expedite the process to resolve technical issues. We developed the solution and the prototype where we combined different data sources to reveal untapped potential of underlying data sets spread across multiple legacy systems.

While I served as a data engineer, my role was not limited to just transforming the data and building the pipeline for our data scientists. I worked directly with our clients and formed great relationships with them, based on trust and mutual understanding.

It helped me develop communication skills, learn how to get to the root of their challenges, and understand the overall business landscape. Those skills, learned early on, built the foundation for me to advance in my career.

Making a difference with fulfilling work

During my time at McKinsey, I have worked across domains, geographies, and technologies. These opportunities helped me grow into my role as senior consultant, while enabling me to touch different spheres of people’s lives. As a result, I’ve gained a real sense of fulfilment.
