My cross–continental journey to a McKinsey startup

Manasi sat down with us to share her inspiring, cross–continental journey from generalist consulting to product management for one of our start–ups:

Why the move?

Before joining the Complexity Management Solution team, I was a generalist consultant based in our Mumbai office. I transferred to Chicago a few years in to join my husband, Chavi, who is at McKinsey too. After about four years in the role, I wanted a change of pace. I started looking outside of McKinsey, then stumbled upon this role within one of our start–ups. I quickly reached out to my now–manager, associate partner Raman, to learn more. This prospective role would eliminate most of my travel–so I could enjoy the Chicago summers (and winters) in full force–and give me more autonomy to shape something of my own.

Now eight months in, I’m working with clients, problem solving, and building a new venture from scratch. My learning is nonstop, and I’m running four or five client engagements at a time, which I love. My experience has been incredible, and I’m extremely happy I made the switch.

Autonomy and mentorship

In my new role, I am an associate product manager for one of our more than 50 startups. As one of McKinsey’s newest ventures (we are a mighty team of three and counting), I have a ton of flexibility to build and shape our product, which helps solve digital procurement challenges.

My McKinsey Mentor and manager, Raman has taught me how to be structured in my approach even in an ambiguous and entrepreneurial environment like this. His procurement expertise has helped me shift into this role smoothly, and built my content knowledge quickly so I can successfully tackle tough procurement challenges with my clients.
