Impact beyond the individual

Prior to joining McKinsey, I studied pathobiology and human biology at the University of Toronto and researched heart valve disease. I found myself more interested in optimizing healthcare and improving the patient experience, than my work at hand. Medical research moved too slowly for me. While it was intellectually stimulating, it was too theoretical. I wanted to bring innovation and sustainable change to whole healthcare systems in a tangible way. I wanted to work with caregivers and hospital leaders to make it happen. I joined McKinsey as a part of the Healthcare Systems & Services practice in an implementation role. For the last six years I have worked with healthcare providers in the US, including rural hospitals, academic centers, and specialty hospitals. During that time, I’ve progressed through four roles and am now an expert associate partner.

Making a difference is central to McKinsey’s culture. I appreciate how we drive change in a transformative way, building capabilities while we work with the client to ensure the changes we make together stick. Working hand in hand with our clients is one of my favorite aspects of my job. In the same day, I might meet with a senior executive to get her thoughts on service line growth, a manager about his approach to scheduling, and a frontline caregiver to understand workflows and opportunities for improvement. At one client, I supported a complete organizational redesign and workforce transformation. We did everything from identifying and implementing unit–level workflow and productivity improvements to designing a multi–year transition plan to implement the strategic vision. For another client, I helped reduce overtime in a hospital unit and improve the caregiver experience. The variety has been amazing, especially since all the work I’m doing really matters – to patients, providers, and me.

As a member of McKinsey Implementation, I have built a career I love. I’ve gotten exactly what I’ve wanted and more.
