Focusing on learning and growth in my new role

I am a product owner at McKinsey, which requires a combination of communication and coordination skills and a desire to stay on top of the latest technologies. The role is a perfect match for my personality and capabilities because I’m fascinated by innovation, and I love to try new things.

Being a woman in technology at McKinsey

McKinsey is a highly diverse and inclusive firm. I am surrounded by capable female colleagues with different personalities who are confident and true to themselves. All firm members are supported equally. I don’t feel my growth or career opportunities are limited because I am a woman. My opinions, skills, and knowledge are valued, and I don’t feel constrained.

The emphasis on equality and diversity extends across the work and social aspects of McKinsey. For example, the firm recently organized a basketball game, and female colleagues were strongly encouraged to participate. I don’t know if I would have signed up to play in the game without the encouragement—and I love to play basketball!

Benefiting from outstanding training and mentorship

When I compare McKinsey with other companies I have worked for, I think one big difference is McKinsey invests much more in the development of its people. I have only been here for two months, but I have already participated in many trainings, and have learned so much. For example, I recently joined the "7-Step Problem Solving” workshop that will be foundational for my work going forward.

Additionally, new hires receive three weeks of training, which offers a deep dive into the firm’s culture, IT tools, resources, and much more. You get a crash course in how to succeed at McKinsey.

Beyond the training, I have benefited from McKinsey’s commitment to mentorship. As a new hire, you are assigned a “buddy,” who provides advice and guidance. My buddy is amazing. She is in technology, with a strong Internet background. Not only is she an expert in her field, but she is friendly and is readily available to chat. She helped me adapt to the firm, shared her experiences, and gave me useful advice on how to network and get staffed on the projects I want. I have learned so much from her, and her support is helping me build the confidence I need to excel in this role.

More about me

I love to travel. Also in my free time, I like to play basketball, do jazz dance, and play the drums.
