Powering economic potential while preserving nature in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic, a Caribbean nation rich in biodiversity, has made significant strides toward the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) targets, increasing net tree cover by 6 percent between 2015 and 2022. Yet challenges remain as mangroves and forests continue to face pressure from natural disasters, coastal development, urbanization, and agriculture.
With roughly a quarter of terrestrial and 11 percent of marine areas under protection, the country saw an opportunity to better safeguard ecosystems while unlocking economic value.
The Ministry of Environment partnered with McKinsey to establish a Conservation Center while McKinsey’s Nature Analytics team developed a fact base to measure progress, estimate investment needs, and identify sustainable financing mechanisms.
