Watch the replay: Report authors discuss what it would take to raise minimum living standards and get on a net-zero pathway

The world needs to tackle two generational challenges: addressing poverty in a more decisive way while simultaneously getting on a net-zero pathway. The extent to which we make concerted progress on both fronts in this decade will shape the course of the world for generations to come. To explore this, MGI convened a virtual event on a new report, From poverty to empowerment: Raising the bar for sustainable and inclusive growth.

The session began with an overview of the findings with MGI report authors Sven Smit, Mekala Krishnan and Anu Madgavkar, followed by a panel discussion with the authors moderated by Vijay Vaitheeswaran, Global energy & climate innovation editor at The Economist.

Questions discussed during the virtual event include:

  • How should leaders think about managing the tension between alleviating poverty and achieving net zero?
  • How can economic growth be part of doing good for the planet?
  • How can we ensure the benefits of growth are spread to households below the empowerment line?
  • When it comes to geopolitics, there is a growing debate around north-south imbalances. What does this mean for the global south? How can politics react to that?
  • A lot of investments are currently out of the money, where can companies be bold and change that equation (and how)?
