Trying something different

If you asked me three years ago, where I would work, McKinsey would never have come to mind. I came across consulting and the firm by chance when a job posting for a supply chain specialist appeared on my LinkedIn feed. I had just completed a master’s degree in supply chain management and expected to return to work at a company in the supply chain and logistics industry, in which I spent the last 11 years.

The job description sounded like an exciting new challenge. I wanted to learn more, so I contacted a few McKinsey alumni and friends. The words and phrases I repeatedly heard were: “exciting and challenging work,” “best learning experiences,” and “great people!” Learning more about the meaningful work McKinsey did and the professional development consultants received throughout their journeys motivated me to apply.

Helping you succeed from the start

Despite my friends’ reassurances, I still had concerns about whether I’d fit in. I worried the environment would be competitive and cut-throat. I couldn’t have been more wrong. My first surprise came during interviews. I’m sure I overprepared, anticipating the interviewers would try to find reasons to prove I wasn’t good enough. Throughout the process, I realized each interview was a conversation with the interviewer who guided me; each interviewer really wanted me to succeed. I received feedback throughout the process which helped me perform better in each subsequent sessions.

Support on the ground

Similarly, on my first project, my team was very helpful and coached me regularly. My team members were supportive and encouraging, even during times when I felt unsure and questioned whether I belonged. Through this and other experiences, I have found mentors within the Operations practice and beyond whom I can turn to for advice.

Confidence to succeed

McKinsey taught me to believe in myself and trust my colleagues to provide the support and resources I need to be at my best. My team members often believe in me more than I believe in myself! There are always challenging days so knowing I have mentors and friends to support me makes tackling them a lot easier.
