Stephan is the global Co-Leader for our Transformation Practice, helping organizations across a wide range of industries to design, orchestrate, and deliver holistic and sustainable transformations. He supports clients in driving major and sustainable improvements in performance, organizational health, capabilities, and social and environmental impact.

Stephan is formerly the global leader of McKinsey’s work in the basic materials sector. He has been a trusted advisor to leading metals and mining companies around the world on strategy, supply-chain, productivity, and operations-transformation-related topics. His teams achieved groundbreaking success in removing bottlenecks from complex supply chains by applying the theory of constraints and advanced analytics.

During his 25 year career with McKinsey, Stephan has done some pioneering work in sustainability, including cowriting the report An Australian cost curve for greenhouse gas reduction, in 2008.

Before joining McKinsey, Stephan taught applied mathematics to graduate students at the Technical University of Berlin while attaining his PhD in nonlinear programming.
