Preparing for a new era of work |
During the past three decades, global output of goods and services rose not only as a result of productivity-enhancing technical advances (including automation) but also a big increase in the size of the labor force throughout the world. In many countries, however, that upsurge has stalled as the number of elderly soars. Meanwhile, highly paid jobs requiring direct, sophisticated interactions among people—for example, the work of doctors, engineers, copywriters, investment bankers, and lawyers—remain relatively hard to automate, so competition, skill shortages, and changing demographics are forcing companies to use this scarce talent more effectively. Those that successfully revamp the how, where, and who of interaction work will enjoy huge benefits. The classic 2012 article “Preparing for a new era of work” shows you how. |
