McKinsey’s UK Medical Elective Programme

McKinsey’s UK medical elective programme was introduced in 2009 to encourage early tenured doctors to become more effective clinical leaders. This programme aims to promote a better understanding of the challenges faced by future doctors through continuously improving healthcare systems in the United Kingdom.

Event details

Who you’ll work with

You will be based in our London office for a duration of six to 12 weeks. You will work with McKinsey colleagues on a variety of internal and client-based healthcare-related projects.

As part of this programme, you will benefit from the full range of e-learning and apprenticeship opportunities available at McKinsey.

What you will do
You’ll work in teams of typically three-to-five consultants to identify, and oftentimes implement, potential solutions for a specific client problem or challenge. The majority of your work will focus on healthcare-related projects. Together, you will help clients in the healthcare space make lasting improvements to their organization’s performance and realize important goals.

To express your interest, please submit your CV—two pages maximum—by July 31, 2023. A cover letter is not necessary.
Digital assessment
As part of your application, you will be asked to complete an online assessment that’s approximately 60 minutes long. This does not require any preparation or prior business knowledge. More details will be shared within a few weeks after you’ve submitted your application.
Interviews
Should your application be successful, you will be invited to participate in one round of virtual interviews with McKinsey consultants. These interviews will take place on August 31, 2023.

Eligibility

You must apply as part of your medical school’s formal elective programme and be available to spend a minimum of six weeks with McKinsey in 2024 (with an option to extend up to 12 weeks in total).

The medical elective programme is a nonevaluative, fixed-term programme. This is an opportunity for you to meet us and learn more about healthcare management. An application for the internship programme is not an application for employment with McKinsey.

A bursary is available from McKinsey toward the cost of the elective.

Qualifications:

  • you are a medical student at a recognised medical school in the United Kingdom or Ireland
  • you’ve achieved a minimum grade of upper-second class or higher, if intercalated BA or BS has been completed, or are a graduate student with a previous degree
  • you have an exceptional academic record with a minimum of 360 UCAS tariff points
  • you are interested in issues relating to clinical and healthcare management
