About Rui

Rui leads Utilityx, a solution within McKinsey’s Electric Power & Natural Gas Practice. Utilityx helps electric-power utilities enhance performance and reduce costs through advanced analytics and diagnostics.

Rui’s work focuses on integrating digital innovation into McKinsey’s client work across the utilities sector.

In this capacity, he works with clients to implement operational-improvement programs—using performance benchmarks and diagnostics—with a key focus on predictive-asset-management journeys.

Examples of his recent clients projects include the following:

  • supporting a large global organization on an SG&A benchmarking and optimization study across all of its European subsidiaries
  • managing the 2017 Global Upstream Operations Benchmark for Energy Insights, covering operations, maintenance, exploration, and workforce—both onshore and offshore
  • supporting a client in the Middle East with design-to-value and procurement optimization for a large capital-expenditure project
  • managing the 2016 North Sea Offshore Operations benchmark, covering operations, maintenance, and workforce
  • helping an energy operator benchmark its maintenance performance across onshore and offshore assets
  • advising a conglomerate on options for entering the energy sector, including assessing the market attractiveness of 23 subsectors and identifying opportunities for M&A and joint ventures
  • working with an African national oil company on implementing an operational improvement project focused on sustainability, capability building, and performance management

On a broader front, Rui also helped develop IPAT, an analytical tool that provides a global view of infrastructure, energy, and real-estate capital project spending and trends.
