About Richard

Richard has spent 20 years advising oil and gas companies throughout Asia and in Europe. As a long-tenured consultant and advisory professional, he has partnered with executives to achieve operational excellence and improve asset productivity, often by putting in place multiyear transformation programs that reverse declining production and reduce costs in important business functions.

As a member of McKinsey’s Petroleum Asset Excellence unit (PAX), Richard is focused on helping to boost on- and offshore production, improve facility availability and reliability, put in place integrated planning, and maximize well and reservoir potential—all while offering performance management coaching to executives and managers.

Examples of his work include:

  • Transformation: implementing a culture of production excellence for an independent Oil & Gas company by dramatically improving the collaboration between the on and off shore organisation through lean processes, rapid root cause analysis of failures and a strong commitment to plan attainment. One BU went from 3rd Quartile performer to 1st Quartile a year after the consultants finished the work.
  • M&A: delivering the detailed planning of the post-merger integration of two global Oil & Gas companies focusing on 30 days before the merger and after day 1
  • Maintenance Excellence: developing and implementing a maintenance strategy for the Dutch unit of a Supermajor focusing on outsourcing of maintenance activities and contractor management to substantially reduce costs
  • Operations strategy: redefining the operations strategy orchestrating an organizational restructuring and cost-reduction program for a large LNG plant in Southeast Asia, gradually reducing the scale of the operations in line with the planned Cessation of Production of a late-life gas field
  • Transformation: implementing operational excellence focused on maintenance and production for a large global on shore operator with the goal to create a ‘show case asset’ that could be used as a template for the roll out to other assets.

Richard is a former partner at Schlumberger Business Consulting, the global advisory unit of Schlumberger acquired by Accenture in 2015. He has completed executive leadership and performance programs at Stanford and INSEAD and speaks Dutch, English, and German.
