About Michael

Michael is the Asia–Pacific leader for McKinsey Digital Labs (MDL), a multidisciplinary team within Digital McKinsey, with expertise spanning experience design, product and data engineering, agile transformation, and more. He also leads Digital McKinsey in Southeast Asia as well as the Singapore hub of the McKinsey Innovation Campus in Asia. Michael has over 20 years of professional experience in the technology, media, and telecommunications sector.

Michael is passionate about disruptive technologies and understanding how these can transform businesses, industries, and societies. His areas of expertise include innovation, growth strategy, M&A, business incubation and building, technology-driven company transformation, experience and product design and engineering, advanced analytics and data monetization, intelligent automation and robotics, enterprise-wide agile transformation as well as digital and analytics capability building.

In addition to serving clients, Michael has been instrumental in driving McKinsey’s strategic initiatives in Digital, such as leading the Singapore McKinsey Innovation Campus, leading the development of new knowledge on disruptive technologies, and highlighting McKinsey’s digital capabilities—including the Digital Quotient, a benchmarking capability that assesses an organization’s digital maturity. In his current role, Michael oversees our team of over 500 digital experts and professionals engaged in digital delivery and advanced technologies, such as robotics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, augmented and virtual reality, and Blockchain.

As a senior partner, Michael gets involved in our most complex engagements in the area of digital and analytics, and has been personally advising senior executives on a wider range of issues related to strategic, operational, and organizational implications in technology-driven transformations. As part of our client service, Michael has also taken on interim management roles with several of our clients, including incubating and leading new digital businesses.

Examples of his recent client work include the following:

  • working with a leading telecommunications organization on a digital-transformation strategy
  • rebranding and redesigning the portfolio for a mobile challenger
  • supporting a client with negotiations for a network-sharing deal
  • designing a large-scale transformation for the entire operations of a fixed-line incumbent’s broadband, TV, and fiber-optics businesses
  • leading the spectrum- and 4G-rollout strategy for a mobile challenger

Outside of McKinsey, Michael is an active business angel, investing in early-stage technology companies, and a mentor of entrepreneurs. He is a regular speaker at tech- and innovation-focused conferences and has a global network in the digital space, and tech industry more broadly. In 2015, Michael was also a member of the Singapore government’s Committee on Future Economy’s Subcommittee on Future Growth Industries and Markets.
