About James

James Chavin co-leads our Recovery and Transformation Services (RTS) group in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Previously, he led McKinsey’s North American Hedge Fund and Distressed Debt Investor Service Group.

James has served as a restructuring and transformation advisor for large multi-national high-tech companies, covering the areas of governance, organization, commercial, supply chain, procurement, R&D, services, finance, HR and working capital. Other major projects include: supporting the turnaround of a $13 billion regional bank with a sizeable mortgage origination platform, including a comprehensive operational turnaround and strategic repositioning, supporting a major creditor to a bankrupt global telecom operator, where he led the development of a creditor reorganization plan, as well as recruited potential management and secured additional plan funding.

Prior to joining McKinsey, James spent four years as an operating executive at Motorola and seven years as a hedge fund trader. He also has experience working as an advisor to the Russian Privatization Ministry and the US Agency for International Development to develop Russia’s land privatization process.

James is passionate about education and has served on the Glencoe School Board, where he created and ran the Math Club.
