Benjamin Maritz

Partner, Tokyo
Advises clients in process and technology-intensive industries on rapid recovery programs, leading to strengthened operations and stronger financial results.

About Benjamin

A founding leader of McKinsey’s RTS practice, Ben directs our recovery and transformation work in Japan. In this capacity, he typically advises companies complex global operations—in industries such as technology, energy, and materials—as they take on large aspirations for performance improvement or face challenging circumstances. Ben specializes in working with companies facing strong pressure for rapid results. He helps clients plan large-scale operational turnarounds, pursue financial restructuring, and, if needed, navigate formal insolvency proceedings.

Prior to RTS, Ben was a leader of McKinsey’s Private Equity Practice. He still draws heavily on that expertise to diagnose and address performance issues, and still works extensively with private equity clients to conduct due diligence and help portfolio companies thrive.

Ben is experienced in leading stakeholder negotiations, including creditor negotiations, and in facilitating merger and acquisition processes in partnership with legal and financial advisors.

Examples of his work include the following:

  • Leading a comprehensive carve-out and turnaround effort for a multinational basic materials company, resulting in increased significantly margins in the face of commodity price declines
  • Helping a US technology company return to growth and achieve a 50 percent increase in market capitalization by streamlining costs, rationalizing products and services, and improving core processes
  • Directing a restructuring program that reduced spending by 20 percent for a manufacturing company based in North and South America
  • Leading a reorganization, cost-reduction, and turnaround program for a semiconductor company based in Asia and the United States
  • Providing financial and operational advisory services to a major independent power producer, including planning for a Chapter 11 restructuring that led to a doubling in enterprise value

Currently, Ben is based in Tokyo. Prior to that Ben has lived and worked in New York, Malaysia, London, Australia and San Francisco. He joined the Firm in 2003 and has an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
