My background

I am an engagement manager in the Amsterdam office, part of Digital McKinsey. Before I joined McKinsey 2.5 years ago, I did a PhD in astrodynamics, both in Delft University as well as the DLR in Munich.

Why McKinsey?

I realized after my PhD I did not want to pursue a career in science. My passion, space, was failing me at the time. So I figured I needed to do something else. I was interested in a lot of different things. In that sense McKinsey fit perfectly: I could get a ‘look behind the scenes’ at a lot of different companies.

Why Digital McKinsey?

Coming out of my PhD, I was mainly interested in technology-related topics, and what technology can mean for companies. Smart application of modern technologies is more and more important for companies these days. McKinsey does not dive into the nitty gritty details, but rather makes the connection to what a technology can mean for a business. In that sense, it provided me a completely new perspective on the place technology has in this world.

The culture

Close, like a club of people within a larger club. All members share the same passion—technology.

Better than a generalist

By joining the Business Technology Practice, you’re only increasing your possibilities at McKinsey. You can still work as a generalist (most of us do), but when specific technology knowledge is needed, you can apply that too. I see it as McKinsey plus.

Will it give me the same development opportunities as a generalist?

It gives you more development opportunities. In addition to all the generalist stuff, it allows you to understand the state-of-the-art in technology application to companies. You’ll receive some very cool training to make you knowledgeable.

Highlight of the first year

In my first year I worked for a bank of which I am a client. We helped them to more effectively communicate with their customers, providing better, more meaningful value propositions. We developed a way of thinking that allowed them to fully use all the data they have about their customers. Think bank account, insurance, social situation etc. Half a year later, I started getting emails from my bank which were a lot more interesting than before. All of a sudden, their value propositions made sense to me.

What advice would you share with others considering a career with McKinsey?

Find out what you like. Talk with people. If you like doing case interviews, and the kind of thinking involved there, you’ll have a good chance you’ll like the work. Talk with other consultants as well—we’re not the only one. Also, if you like travelling or working abroad, McKinsey is the place to be
