Making it in America: Revitalizing US manufacturing

US manufacturing has lost global market share over the past two decades but continues to punch above its weight. Manufacturing makes up 9 percent of employment and 12 percent of US GDP but drives 35 percent of productivity growth, 60 percent of exports, and 70 percent of private-sector R&D. MGI’s research found that by 2025, the United States could boost value added in manufacturing by 20 percent over current trends by building on strengths such as a lucrative domestic market, human capital, and robust technology and innovation capabilities.

Technology is creating avenues for US manufacturers to improve their productivity, agility, and competitiveness. But capturing the opportunities will require new capabilities and investment. Moreover, the research suggests that more firms need to export in order to bring the benefits of global trade to more US workers.
