Role Descriptions

As a business analyst, you will work on client projects as part of a team and take responsibility for problem solving. You will play a key role in gathering and analyzing data, interviewing clients, and contributing to the team’s recommendations. You will spend about 3 years developing broad business skills, and then you can choose to take educational leave—to obtain your MBA (financially supported by McKinsey) or to gain other meaningful experiences—and come back as an associate after graduation.

What we look for

We look for exceptional people from a variety of academic fields and professions. Starting in the final year of your undergraduate degree, you can apply as a business analyst.

As an associate or junior associate, you will focus on important portions of client projects and work toward leading them. You will have direct contact with senior clients and a high degree of independence. You might conduct analyses, interview clients and their customers, plan and facilitate workshops, translate conclusions into recommendations, or help design and implement large-scale organizational-change programs. You will get extensive training to help build your core consulting skills and will receive ongoing feedback and mentoring from teammates and mentors.

After 2 or 3 years, based on performance, you may move into the role of engagement manager and lead client projects, manage teams, coach junior colleagues, and take responsibility for initiatives within McKinsey.

What we look for

We seek people with different backgrounds, experience, and passions, including a variety of academic fields and professions, such as financial services, life sciences, engineering, and humanities. If you are studying for an MBA, or have a master’s degree or PhD and more than 3 years of work experience, you can apply for an associate role. If you have an undergraduate degree and more than 3 years of work experience, or if you are studying for a master’s degree, you can apply as a junior associate.

We occasionally hire experienced professionals—with exceptional track records in the private or public sector—into senior consulting roles, as engagement managers and associate partners. Generally, though, we advance our consultants into these senior positions from business analyst and associate roles, based on their contributions and performance.

As a consulting analyst, you will work on client projects as part of a team and take responsibility for research and problem solving. You will play an important role in gathering and analyzing data and contributing to the team’s recommendations. You will develop broad business and research skills, working and actively participating in teams. After 6 or 12 months, based on performance, you may move into the role of business analyst, playing a key role on client-facing teams.
